![]() ![]() The character model is coming along nicely and is nearly finished. There’s a bit to add and clean up with the new building system, but once it’s sorted the move to customisable rafts also shouldn’t be much of a problem. The current menu system does not fit the new system well with placing panels and building parts so we’re sorting something out asap. We’re also working on a new crafting interface as part of the new system. The building pieces are just simple block-outs for now while we finalise the designs and how it will all work together with different material tiers. The building side of the crafting system is also running on the newer system while the crafting side is stuck on the old system. The ‘floating camp-fire’ bug is a casualty of the new crafting system being midway. These features will be integrated more fully as the system progresses. It’s in a very early stage, but it’s already incorporating new features like structural integrity and destruction. The new building part of the system has been introduced with the latest build. The crafting and building system is also getting a huge rework. Yay! All these changes meant reworking almost all the game mechanics. You’ll be able to download any community created zones and add them to your custom world like a jigsaw puzzle. In-between these hand-crafted zones are ‘resource’ islands which are completely procedural like you’ve seen previously but are now up to 4x the size. The idea is to have the community involved with this process as well by allowing you to make your own custom map zones to share. Eventually this starting zone, and many others will be detailed out by a level designer. We’ve been torn between procedural generation and hand-crafted world design so we came up with a solution to combine the two. The new terrain system is split up into ‘zones’ where each zone has a biome with parameters that can be procedurally generated at run time or hand-crafted and loaded from disk… or a mixture of both. For now you start on a hand-crafted starting island which is mainly just a tester for all our new game elements. The terrain system has had a complete rework for the recent update. On that note – the raft mechanics are currently being revamped so there might be a few glitches before we push the new mechanics. Eventually we’ll incorporate more gameplay elements like drowning that will make it hard to traverse open water, necessitating ‘vehicles’ like rubber and wooden rafts, life preservers, boats, etc. We appreciate that some people might get a bit motion sick so we’ve added an options slider for the effect. ![]() ![]() We’ve started integrating the ocean with the player movement and rafts as well which definitely adds to the experience of being stuck in open ocean in a little life raft. ![]() It’s already looking great, but we still have a bit to do to integrate it better (removing some artefacts, optimising for different systems, etc) but when it’s finished it should easily look and perform better than the previous system. The new ocean is probably the first thing that is noticeably different when you start a new game. It is on the experimental branch so keep in mind that a lot of the features aren’t fully incorporated or optimised! There’s been some pretty big changes with a lot of the features we’ve been talking about starting to be introduced like the new ocean, terrain and building system. It’s Stranded Deep… just bigger and better! So we recently updated the experimental branch with a new build and it might look a little different than the last. ![]() ![]() If I had to follow all my news channels by going through their home pages, I'd need to stop following most of them. They also share locks and/or safety pins to help prevent your camera accidentally being disconnected, and sandbag hooks either at the end of the center column or on the side of the spider, from which you can hang some weight for extra stability. The Seamoth will always dock facing left when looking directly in the same direction as when the Moonpool was placed (I.E. ![]() Hopefully one day the game will let us rotate those ladders. For this reason, most of my base builds have the Moonpool orientation seen above, otherwise I have to deal with awkwardly placed ladders that seem to get in the way. Saldy, this would also change the orientation of the Ladders. If I wanted the Moonpool to align with the smaller side on the front of the small base, then I’d have to change my own orientation when laying down the initial compartment. Once placed, it’s easier to see the orientation. Relative to your position, the Moonpool will always appear perpendicular to you along the long side and if attaching it to an existing compartment, there is no way to rotate it. The ladder rule still applies which means ladders will always align perpendicular to the long side of the Moonpool. This means that you can’t rotate the Moonpool by repositioning yourself unless it’s the first item you place. Once the first compartment is placed, the Moonpool will always align along it’s long side (The side with two connections) compared to the first compartment placed. Ladders placed in the multipurpose room will always align with the ladder along the outer circumference of the compartment to give you as much foot room as possible, the exception being a centered placed ladder – this will follow the same ladder rule mentioned above. Keep in mind that this only effects ladders placed in the connector compartments such as the I, L, T, and X. If you ever get turned around while inside of a base and forget which direction your station is facing, this lettering will get you orientated. Now note which side of the lettering the ladder gets placed. Note the unused hatch, which happens to always have text that appears upside down when facing the same direction of the compartment placement. I will need to enter in order to build a ladder to reach the 2nd level.īy entering the base from the same side it was facing when I built it, it’s easier to see the alignment. In this next screenshot, I’ve added a hatch and upper level but I’m still in the same position. In this first screenshot, I’m about to lay down a X compartment. This cannot be emphasized enough because it ties with all of the other orientation issues below. This also means that the direction you face when placing the first compartment determines the ‘front’ and ‘rear’ of the base. The ladder will align with the forward most part of the hatch when facing the same direction that you were facing when placing the compartment. The direction you face when placing the first compartment of your base determines which side of the hatch the ladder gets placed on. However, you can still deal with them once you understand the mechanics. If you’re like me and somewhat obsessive with builds, then these issues will be a major drag. There are three orientation issues when building in Subnautica. ![]() ![]() ![]() The pistols are 3 and 4 IIRC, for the makarov and the tokarev. I assume they are at 5 for a weaker one and 6 for a higher one. I'm currently at STR6 with a pistol/SMG build, only using melee and pistols so far since I haven't found any SMGs yet. Though in ATOM it seems the STR req is even more punishing than FO since even simple rifles need like a 5 STR and automatics and snipers do indeed seem to req a 7. And yeah, the best rifles do indeed need high strenght, same as in FO. Each weapon have "minimum" reqs to use and if you do not have them, you get a reduced chance to score a hit. It means you'll get a negative factor when calculating to hit chance with guns. I did however treat a "sick" guy from a desease using a rain dance (my DEX10 is paying off!), the gullible sod and heard another sad life-story from a pretty bitter guy peeling potatoes. Next up was a moonshine farm, but that didn't have so much info. In the end I chose to take a side, conflicting with what I had intended first, because info I got made me (and my character) change his mind. Great little sidequest there as well, well written and emotional. Thanks to personality and speechchecks I could find out the entire backstory ( I think). Next up was a farm where a gruesome thing had happened. ![]() It's very well made and add tons of immersion. I LOVE all these little additions of communistic propaganda, ie "decadent western influences" etc. In the circus tent my guy was chosen to be brough up on stage and performed a "modernistic decadent western style break-dance" to the applauds of the crowd. The dialogues were great and it had a short side-quest involving a feud between "freaks". I went to a cool place just now, a circus with mutants and freaks. That would be interesting.Īnways, if anyone else is playing the game it would be great to share experiences, so feel free to write your own impressions about the game. It seems the game have shields, so I really hope I can wear a riot shield and use pistols and perhaps SMGs. I haven't read much about the game, I want to experience most if myself first and make my own mistakes. Maybe 3 if they went with 1 per 2 in personality, but let's see. I assume ATOM will have a follower limit based on personality, just as FO had on charisma, so with 6 there I hope the game allows me to add many followers. I've thought up a char which focus on small firearms, pistols and SMGs, with max AP, high dodge but with high stats in INT, "perception" (called attention in ATOM) and decent personality. I've only fought ants and dire rats still, but the old FO way for early game of "stick and move" has worked so far. Dunno how it will play out once I have followers and there's many enemies, but so far so good. I like turnbased with action points, so it works for me but it is a bit clunky with today's standards. The combat, the little I've experienced so far, is good and almost identical to FO1&2. This, I guess, further emphasize the dev's ambition to make you choose carefully and that every choice come with a cost to lock you out from being good at everything. The only downside, which I've only read about and not yet experienced, is that the perk tree is expensive and you can't be expected to reach many higher-level perks. Because I have most likely picked a few bad choices, but it doesn't matter, I only look forward to that. I hope ATOM is similar in that regard, but I of course have already realized I will have to restart sooner or later and remake a new, proper char based on those experiences. I've tried a build with is stat heavy with penalties to skills, very similar to my fallout builds, which in FO lead to being very good at fewer things rather then decent at many things. The stat points are few and you can't be good at anything without also being bad at something else. ![]() The character creation is complex and comes with really tough choices. Some of the rumours are hilarious since they reference Mad Max, Fallout, etc in a very humorous way, as if those things would have happened in the ATOM world. A few minor spelling errors etc, but the overall feeling of the game is magnificent so far (I've only seen the first little town). I only played like 2 hours yesterday, and half was just making the character, so I am very interested in playing further. It's very, very FO-esque, almost too much since it has kept many of the things that wasn't that great in FO1 and 2. I had watched a little LPs of the beta so I knew approx what I was getting. Anyone tried/playing ATOM RPG? Bought it and installed it late yesterday and the first impressions are good. ![]() ![]() ![]() Vikingsholm Trail leads to the abandoned but enchanting castle, Vikingsholm, and gives incredible views of Emerald Bay.
